It was making a fanning noise, so I looked up a solution to that online and it said I should perform all software updates. So I did that, but it was taking forever, so I held down the power button until the computer shut down. Then I turned it on again, but during startup, the normal apple logo appeared with the spinning circle thing underneath it, like usual, but then suddenly the apple logo changed to a circle with a line through it. I tried all the stuff I could think of, like removing the keyboard and mouse and blah blah bloohey and all that stuff. Is in normal for the black screen to go through the checks so long without letting you type anything in?

Thanks so much for the detailed methods of getting rid of this problem. Was literally an update, restart, no boot. So long story short, if you get a white screne, try to enter your login credentials and see what happens. I installed two different brand new solid state hard drives into it. System Information shows that this Mac has booted into Safe Mode. I will keep trying. Dont know if it matters, but I found it helped when it was plugged in!
